I always try to open these packets by tearing at the little arrow that says "open here". Then I curse them, bite them and/or resort to sharp implements.
Quite by chance today I happened to have the packet facing away from me, and noticed a little pre-cut tear -- about a centimetre away from the "open here" sign. It turns out to open very easily.
